Large LEGO Equatorial Sundial
Wednesday, August 25th, 2010
This is a larger version of an equatorial sundial built entirely from LEGO bricks. The segments are constructed using 1 x 2 hinge plates. These are bent at 15-degree angles to create half an arch with 12 segments marking the hours. It is mounted on a pedestal at the balancing point of the dial to make it easier to tilt. The tilting mount is constructed with two ball joints.
The noon hour is marked with two 2 x 4 plates at the center of the arc. The dial is tilted at the same angle as the local lattitude, which at my location is 41 degrees. A photo of the dial casting a shadow is below.
